Dodge and SRT are attempting to move the iconic Dodge Charger muscle car and Challenger pony car forward by recalling the past, announcing the return of the iconic B5 Blue and Plum Crazy exterior paint options, along with a retro-inspired “Shakedown Package” for the Challenger. Dodge’s ability to captivate fans and new buyers with niche packages and customization options has been paramount to the Charger and Challenger’s continued success as the world waits for a wholesale redesign; both cars outsold the refreshed, 2019 Ford Mustang last month, despite riding on aging platforms with their origins in Chrysler’s Daimler days.
New-for-2018, says FCA, the heritage exterior colors B5 Blue and Plum Crazy are now available on all 2018 Dodge Chargers, and can be ordered on Challenger T/A, T/A Plus, and T/A 392 models; availability will expand to the rest of the Challenger lineup later in the model year. B5 Blue premiered in 1969, with Plum Crazy debuting the following year, and they’ve proven to be two of the most desirable, collectible paint options for the Dodge Charger and Challenger – especially among enthusiasts. Other historic Mopar “High Impact Paint” colors – hues such as Panther Pink, Hemi Orange, and Top Banana – will remain extinct for now, although Go Mango remains available.
As for Dodge’s new “Shakedown Package” (pictured), it’s inspired by the 1971 Dodge Shakedown Challenger concept shown at 2016’s SEMA Show, and is available on 2018 Dodge Challenger R/T Shaker, R/T Plus Shaker, and 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker models. Wearing an MSRP of $995, the package unites “old-school muscle and modern styling,” FCA says, incorporating asymmetrical black racing stripes over the hood, roof, and decklid; white-face instrument gauges; and an upgraded Alpine audio system with six speakers and a 275-watt amp (R/T Shaker), or nine speakers and a 506-watt amp (R/T Shaker Plus, 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker).
“Dodge//SRT has a rich history of using iconic heritage and high-impact colors and unique graphics to make our vehicles look custom, straight from the factory,” says FCA North America Head of Passenger Car Brands Steve Beahm. “Whether a customer remembers B5 and Plum Crazy from when they were new in the ‘60s and ‘70s or they’re a new customer today, these paint colors and unique Shaker stripes stand out in the crowd and speak to our customers’ passion for their cars and their love of the Dodge and SRT brands.”
