The parents of late actor Anton Yelchin, who died tragically in 2016 in an accident involving his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, have reached a settlement in their Wrongful Death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The confidential settlement was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Anton Yelchin, best known for playing fictional Starship Enterprise navigator Pavel Chekov in a series of Star Trek reboot films starting in 2009, was killed in June, 2016 when his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick pillar and causing asphyxia. The rotary shift knob used on that model-year vehicle, which doesn’t provide satisfactory tactile feedback when “Park” is engaged, has been linked to numerous accidents; a NHTSA probe launched shortly after Anton Yelchin’s death found that it may have been to blame in as many as 266 crashes and 68 injuries.
The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee was part of a recall related to the rotary e-shifter. Gary Dordick, attorney for Victor and Irina Yelchin, says that a recall letter addressed to Anton was only mailed to him seven days after his death.
