The newly-minted Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team today unveiled its latest machine for the FIA Formula One World Championship: the C37. Wearing a red-and-white livery with the Alfa Romeo crest and the iconic “Quadrifoglio” badge on the engine cover, the C37 will call upon Ferrari’s latest F1 engine for power, and leverage some “significantly” altered aerodynamics to outpace last year’s Sauber car, says Technical Director Jörg Zander.
The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 C37 will make its official debut at the first 2018 F1 winter tests from February 26th through March 1st, at the Circuit de Catalunya near Barcelona, Spain.
Alfa Romeo has a long and storied history in the world’s premier motorsport series, winning the World Championship of Drivers in 1950 and 1951 before withdrawing due to pressure from Ferrari and a funding shortfall. The Quadrifoglio good luck-charm badge, worn by both of the winning cars, has an even longer history, having appeared on Alfa’s top-performing cars since Ugo Sivocci and the Alfa Romeo RL won the 15th running of the infamous Targa Florio in 1923.
Years after first withdrawing from Grand Prix racing, Alfa Romeo rejoined as an engine supplier in the 1960s, later reentering the series with a factory works team in the late-70s. The works team pulled out after the 1985 season, and ceased supplying engines a couple of years later, making the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team the Italian marque’s first foray in Formula One racing in three decades.
“Our target ahead of 2018 is clear: We have to catch up with the field and to continue improving our performance during the course of the season,” says Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur. “The return of Alfa Romeo to Formula 1 sets another milestone in the [Sauber] team’s history, and I am proud that such a historical brand has chosen us for their return to the sport. We are eager to start the 2018 season as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team.”
Upon the new F1 car’s unveiling, Technical Director Jörg Zander remarked: “It is great to finally reveal the C37 today. The 2018 challenger is the result of the hard work that everyone in the factory has put in over the last few months.
“The car philosophy is much different to that of the C36,” he continued. “The aerodynamic concept has changed significantly, and the C37 has several new features in comparison to its predecessor. We are positive that the new concept offers us more opportunities and will help us to make improvements during the course of the season. The 2018 Ferrari engine will also give us a boost in terms of our performance. We hope that we will make progress with the C37 and that we are more competitive compared to 2017.”
