One needn’t look particularly hard at the all-new Jeep Wrangler JL to come to the conclusion that it’s better than its predecessor in nearly every measurable way. Poll everyone who attended the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, however, and they won’t just tell you it’s superior to the outgoing Jeep Wrangler JK; they’ll say it’s the best all-new vehicle to appear at this year’s show.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL has won a Best of Show award at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show in the category of “Best All-New Production Vehicle,” as chosen by auto show attendees. The rugged SUV beat the likes of the utilitarian 2019 Chevrolet Silverado in second and the stylish 2019 VW Arteon in third, despite having bowed last year at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. The profiles of both the Silverado and the Arteon ought to have received a boost by virtue of the fact that their respective debuts were more fresh.
But that’s not Jeep’s only CAS Best of Show award this year; the FCA utility vehicle brand also won “Best Exhibit,” ending Chevrolet’s two-year streak. The centerpiece of the exhibit was the Camp Jeep Test Track, which has been a key part of the Jeep stand since 2005. The track this year featured ground clearance stairs, extreme break-over rock formations, an 18-foot-tall 30-degree ascent/descent hill, and more.
Other Best of Show winners at this year’s Chicago Auto Show included the Cadillac Escala (Best Concept Vehicle), 2019 BMW i8 (Best Green Vehicle), and the 2018 Ford GT (Vehicle I’d Most Like To Have In My Driveway).
