Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles is making big news in the motorsport space as of recent. It recently announced Alfa Romeo will return to Formula 1 after a decades-long hiatus. Soon after that news broke, it was rumored Maserati may also re-enter F1. But, now, the Italian brand may also be a contender for Formula E.
Motorsport.com reported on Saturday that Maserati is a leading contender for a Formula E entry. CEO Sergio Marchionne, and chairman of Ferrari, once said the Ferrari brand “needs to be involved” in the all-electric motorsport. Later on, he changed his tone. Thus, rumors that Maserati may join swirled. The brand will also lead FCA’s electrification charge, per previous reports.
At the Alfa Romeo F1 launch announcement, Marchionne was questioned on Maserati’s motorsport future, and when asked about Formula E, he said, “We observe, we’re looking at it.”
Formula E will cap the number of teams at 12 when Porsche and Mercedes-Benz join the motorsport for the 2019/2020 season. That means if Maserati were to join, it would need to partner with a current team. As the report notes, only Techeetah and Dragon Racing participate sans a manufacturer.
