Although Alfa Romeo once planned for the 4C as a limited-run production car, it’s received a new lease on life. Now, the brand plans for substantial upgrades to the mid-engine sports car next year, likely for the 2019 model year.
Autocar reported last Saturday that the 4C will undergo a refresh and include many upgrades next year. Sadly, they won’t include a manual transmission. They will include new suspension and steering components for better ride and handling characteristics.
Roberto Fedeli, head of Alfa Romeo and Maserati’s engineering departments, also told the publication a new engine may be in the cards, possibly with more power. Right now, the Alfa Romeo 4C soldiers on with a 1.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 237 horsepower. It’s still a riot, despite the small displacement.
Speaking of the 4C’s extended life, he highlighted the brand’s return to Formula 1 as a factor and said the 4C will be Alfa Romeo’s halo car.
“We are coming back to Formula 1,” he said, “and we need the 4C to be our halo car.”
We just hope it retains its manual steering setup.
