I think that if you don’t do the full analysis of what the origin of the electrical power is, where it comes from, how you get batteries into these cars, what the cost is in terms of CO2 and the environment, I think the analysis that we are going to save the planet with electric cars is nonsense.
If the base of that electrical production is nuclear, then I have zero issue. We’ll all be doing the right thing. But you are embracing nuclear power as the solution to your problems. If you are relying on fossil fuels to produce it, I think the issue is much bigger.
Marchionne has also gone on the record criticizing Tesla’s business model. Yet, despite these beliefs, the Maserati chairman has endorsed the plan to make every model from the famous Italian brand electrified after 2019. Though he’s suggested that the the fate of diesel has more or less forced FCA’s hand on the matter.
As for other FCA electric vehicles: Sergio Marchionne says that Ferrari has no plans to produce an EV, nor will a Jeep Wrangler EV come to life. While Fiat does offer the 500E, it is by no means profitable, a fact that certainly won’t help convince Sergio to change his mind on the matter.
