Michael Schumacher is one of the greatest legends in Formula 1 racing, with 7 championships under his belt; five of which were earned at the Monaco Grand Prix. Schumacher’s final Monaco victory came in 2001, and the Ferrari F2001 with chassis no. 211 that he piloted at the event was recently sold for $7.5 million USD, making it the most expensive modern-day F1 race car ever.
The Ferrari F2001 was the first car to be auctioned off during the RM Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale, and it happened in dramatic fashion as an eight-way bidding war pushed the selling price to nearly double the projected value of $4 million.
Some of the money from the sale has been donated to the Keep Fighting Foundation, which is a global non-profit organization founded by Schumacher.
Edit: And yes, the car is still completely functional.
