Fiat-Chrysler first filed to patent the design back in 2014 and spy photographers have spotted various prototypes with massive amounts of camouflage at the rear, presumably to hide the design. The latest photos show the tailgate off in all its glory and we can clearly see the seam where the split occurs.
The tailgate will drop down in normal operation, but the offset seam suggests the right side of the tailgate will open in a barn-door-like fashion. A handle to open it is likely inside the bed or at the top of the tailgate itself, but the photos don’t depict one, so we’re simply assuming.
Ram will debut the truck at the 2018 North American International Auto Show this January so we’ll likely learn more about the truck leading up to its debut. Stay tuned.
