Last month, a Monticello woman parked her 2002 Jeep Wrangler at the township cemetery in central Illinois, and went for a walk. But when she returned, she found a 2010 Nissan Leaf in its place. Talk about a downgrade.
It turns out the Nissan had been stolen from Texas the previous day, and bore a stolen Illinois license plate. And that’s about all the information investigators had going into this series of grand theft auto.
But wait, there’s more!
Three days later the stolen Jeep Wrangler was discovered in Lake County, Indiana. The Jeep had been struck by a two-mile long freight train, and then dragged about a quarter-mile before ending up on its side in the grass adjacent to the track. What a bizarre turn of events.
Piatt County Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Apperson told reporters that the investigation is on going as the Piatt County police continue to work with authorities in Kansas and Indiana. Without any eye witness accounts or video surveillance footage, this will be one hard case to crack.
