Scuderia Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel nabbed second place at the Formula 1 Von Österreich Grand Prix over the weekend, ceding the top podium spot to Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes-AMG. The race started off an easy one for Bottas, whose start gave him such a lead that race stewards felt the need to investigate for any evidence of a jump start.
But as much of the field switched from Pirelli Ultrasoft to Supersoft tires, Vettel started gaining on Bottas, steadily closing in on the Finnish F1 driver throughout the second half of the race. By the end, Vettel had failed to make a pass, but crossed the line just six tenths of a second behind.
With this result, Ferrari remains in second for the constructors’ title behind Mercedes-AMG, but Vettel now has a comfortable 20-point lead for the drivers’ title, with 171 points to Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton’s 151. Hamilton, who started the race from eighth, managed to battle his way up to fourth by the end of the hour-and-twenty-minute round.
Vettel’s Scuderia Ferrari teammate, Kimi Räikkönen, followed close behind, finishing fifth.
Next up on the Formula 1 calendar is the Rolex British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit, Sunday, July 16th. We’ll be watching closely to see if Sebastian Vettel can manage to expand his points lead in the championship.
