Tom Linebarger, chairman and chief executive officer at Cummins Inc., has expressed interest in developing electric vehicles in a recent interview with Bloomberg Business.
As you likely know, Cummins is the longtime supplier of diesel engines for Ram. Linebarger’s statement wasn’t made so much in regard to personal transportation, such as Ram’s line of pickups, but rather commercial trucks and busses. He says research shoes EV tech will become economically viable to major transportation and shipping companies in the near future and they want to be at the forefront of that charge.
If Ram were to ever adopt an electrification system, and it’s rumored they do indeed have a 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid pickup in the works, it’s likely it would be developed in-house at Fiat Chrysler. If it did ever get to the point where HD diesel trucks needed hybrid supplementation for emissions or performance reasons, it doesn’t seem far fetched that Cummins would lend Ram some know-how.
