Half of the GTLM field was involved in a wreck going into Turn 1 one the first lap of Saturday’s Advance Auto Parts Sportscar Showdown from Circuit of the Americas.
The pileup was sparked when the No. 66 Ford GT, which started fourth, got into the left rear of the No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTE. The Ferrari spun, which sent it into the No. 67 Ford GT before it jetted across the track and impacted the No. 4 Corvette C7.R hard. The No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR was involved in the coming together as well, bringing the total of involved GTLM parties to nine.
The No. 67 Ford GT needed to be towed back to the pits, while the No. 66 GT drove back in under its own power. The No. 4 C7.R pitted with major rear suspension damage and the No. 912 911 was forced to stop with front end damage and broken steering. This left the No. 3 C7.R, the No. 911 Porsche 911 and the No. 24 and No. 25 BMW M6s to fight for the win, with the No. 3 C7.R emerging victorious.
Giancarlo Fisichella, who was driving the No. 62 Ferrari when it was spun, was forced to retire from the race and forego a potentially strong result at the Austin, Texas track. Check out the replay of the Turn 1 wreck embedded below and click here for full IMSA results from Circuit of the Americas.
