A United Kingdom-based engineering company has developed a high-performance military vehicle that is powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine lifted from a Maserati Ghibli.
The company, Horiba-MIRA, was commissioned by a United Arab Emirates-based manufacturer to engineer the vehicle, which it has dubbed the ‘RIV (Rapid Intevention Vehicle). The RIV was designed with the UAE’s special forces in mind and will help them to quickly and easily transport up to four heavily armed 120 kg soldiers across the desert.
The RIV’s body and frame are mostly made up of steel, while the hood is made of composite. It uses a flat floor to minimize the chances of it getting caught up on sand dunes and independent, variable-height, long-travel suspension to help handle the demanding terrain. Like a HMMV Hummer, it also uses an onboard tyre inflation system, enabling the driver to select the ideal tire pressure for different surface conditions.
The Maserati diesel engine has been upgraded to make 296 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the RIV’s four-wheel drive system through FCA’s ZF-built eight-speed automatic transmission. Torsen differentials and a transfer case with lockers are present as well. Horiba-MIRA claims a 0-62 mph time of just over 10 seconds and top speed of over 100 mph.
The RIV is the “fastest vehicle across the desert,” according to Horiba-MIRA. It’s currently under evaluation by the UAE military, so you actually might see this futuristic, Maserati-powered military vehicle in action one day.
