The first of two pre-season Formula 1 tests are over and on the final day of the 4-day demo, it was Scuderia Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen that topped the time charts.
It’s so far not clear where Ferrari stands amid this year’s seemingly well-contested F1 pack, however Raikkonen was positive after climbing out of the newly christened SF70H Thursday afternoon.
“A new year, a new car and new rules,” said the Fin. “What I can say is that the team has worked very well over the winter. Whether or not it will be enough, we cannot tell yet.”
“I’ve got the feeling that we learned some lessons from last year and at the moment, we can’t complain about how testing has gone so far. But before Melbourne, we have another week of testing and we still have a lot of work to do,” he added.
Thursday’s test was the first ‘wet’ session of the pre-season and marked the first time the all-new Pirelli Wet tires were taken out of the garage. Raikkonen’s quickest lap on the treaded rubber was a 1:20.82, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen slotting in behind him with a 1:21.769. Reigning champions Mercedes-Benz opted out of the test after their new W08 experienced electrical problems early on in the day.
The second pre-season test session will gets underway on Tuesday Marc 7th, when Sebastian Vettel will take the helm. The 2017 F1 season will kick off with qualifying for the 2017 Australian Grand Prix on March 25th.
