A mysterious Ferrari 488 prototype was recently spied undergoing tests in the Italian Alps, fuelling rumors that a new version of the 488 with KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) may be on the way.
The spy shots aren’t the sole reason behind said 488 hybrid rumors. Last August, YouTube’s Marchettino spotted a 488 mule on Ferrari property in Maranello. While filming the car, Ferrari technicians came over to move it when he heard one of them tell the other to ensure he kept the KERS system off.
Further fueling the rumors were statements made by Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionne that indicated all Ferraris after 2019 will feature some kind of hybrid propulsion system. The automaker will only use hybrid tech to boost performance, however, so it’s likely that a 488 hybrid, if it were to arrive, would only tap into its KERS system for extra power and wouldn’t be able to travel under electric power alone.
