Italian police have thwarted a strange plot by a gang of criminals to steal the body of Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari.
According to Automotive News, the suspects had planned to break into Ferrari’s grave in Modena, Italy and have the body returned to the Ferrari family for a ransom. Enzo is buried in an above-ground family tomb at San Cataldo cemetery – which is located not far from Ferrari’s factory in Maranello.
Few details about the plot we’re revealed by Italian authorities, but they added that it was discovered during an investigation into an arms and drug trafficking ring. A “number” of arrests were made in the case, but it’s not clear how many individuals were involved.
Ferrari passed away in 1988 at the age of 90. No official cause of death was given, however The New York Times reported at the time that the longtime racing team owner was”known to have suffered from kidney disease.”
