If you want an inexpensive two-seat convertible sports car and live in North America, you really only have one option: the Mazda Miata. The arrival of the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider has given fans of the segment a second (albeit very similar) option, but if you’re shopping used, the Miata is really the sole choice.
A rare opportunity to own a cheap two-seat drop top that isn’t a Miata recently presented itself on Craigslist in New Westminster, British Columbia. For $10,800, you could slip yourself behind the wheel of a 1998 Fiat Barchetta – a two-seat roadster produced by the Italian automaker for select European markets and Japan.
The Barchetta was never as popular as some of its rivals, such as the aforementioned Miata or BMW Z3. That was likely due to the fact that its 130 horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine sent drive to the front wheels despite its clear intention to be a sportscar. If you don’t care about track days or auto cross events, however, the Barchetta will should perform its duty as a stylish and rare Italian cruiser that won’t break the bank just fine. It also has a six-speed manual transmission, so any hope for an engaging drive has not been lost entirely.
