Fiat Chrysler and Mopar will sponsor three Dodge Challenger Drag Paks for the 2017 NHRA season after providing factory support for a single Challenger Drag Pak amateur race team in 2016.
Last year Joe Welch Racing fielded a Gen-III HEMI Drag Pak wrapped in official Mopar graphics in the NHRA’s Sportsman category – the first time Mopar provided factory support for one of its Drag Pak teams. This year team owner Joe Welch is adding a second entry to be piloted by one of Dodge’s yet-to-be-named NHRA drag racing stars.
A third Mopar and Dodge backed entry will be fielded by Jeff Teuton and driver Kevin Helms. The pair teamed up to capture the 2015 NHRA Stock Eliminator World Championship in a Drag Pak and this year will return to the strip with the bar set high in a new supercharged Drag Pak.
In addition to providing more factory support for Drag Pak teams, FCA will also ship engineers to each of the 24 NHRA Nationals events to provide all Mopar-powered Sportsman racers with technical advice and guidance. The automaker has put a rewards program in place as well that will allow amateur Drag Pak racers to scoop up monetary rewards for putting up strong performances.
“Amateur Sportsman racers fuel our brand’s involvement in NHRA competition,” said Bill Harry, Head of Marketing at Mopar. “In 2017, we’re backing up those words with new initiatives that prove our commitment to our most dedicated and passionate brand ambassadors. We’re also very excited to work more closely with the Dodge brand in providing select factory-backed support for Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak drivers. This enhanced commitment, combined with our championship-winning relationship with Don Schumacher Racing in Funny Car and Top Fuel, demonstrates that we are focused on NHRA involvement that makes the most sense for the Mopar brand.”
