Ferrari Enzo once said “race cars are neither beautiful nor ugly. They become beautiful when they win.” We tend to agree with that, but an exception has to be made for the beautiful Lancia Stratos, which would remain a beautiful racecar even if it lost every race it ever entered.
Luckily the Stratos didn’t lose every race it ever entered. It dominated Group 4 rally in the mid ‘70s, winning the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975 and 1976. A Ferrari Dino V6 ensured it also sounded great doing it, while Bertone bodywork penned by the great Marcello Gandini made it a hit on the road and the rally stages.
With undeniably cool wedge-like looks, prime racing pedigree and a great-sounding Ferrari V6 to top it off, it’s easy to see why the Stratos is one of the most iconic road cars of all time. Several Stratos recently participated in an amateur rally in San Marino and car-crazed YouTuber NM225 was on hand to capture the scene on video. Check it out above if you want to see this old rally car in action without having to dig up old Group B footage.
