AllPar user ‘Ruptured Duck’ has drawn up a concept that could accurately depict how Fiat Chrysler will manage to make an open-top pickup. Rather than having a retractable soft top and a completely removable hard top roof like the Wrangler SUV, Ruptured Duck’s design uses two removable roof panels, similar to the removable driver and passenger panels on the current Wrangler JK.
According to Jeep sources that spoke to AllPar, Ruptured Duck’s drawing “is fairly accurate, particularly in the representation of the panels.” The website notes an entirely removable roof wasn’t possible as it would compromise the structural integrity of the vehicle, so panels and support bars, (like in the standard Wrangler SUV) will be used instead.
The two-door 2005 Jeep Gladiator Concept (pictured) utilized a similar solution to provide an open-top driving experience. However instead of the removable glass panels we’re expecting to see for the JK Wrangler, the Gladiator featured a large retractable canvas section. The glass panels are obviously a more permanent solution.
