Fiat Chrysler has paired its dual dry clutch automatic transmission with its popular 120 horsepower 1.6-liter MultiJet diesel engine and is offering the combination in a variety of vehicles including the Jeep Renegade, Fiat 500X, Fiat 500L and Fiat Tipo.
The new gearbox works in conjunction with the vehicle’s steering and braking systems, as well as the engine control unit, in order to select the ideal gear for the situation at hand. FCA says the DCT unit can be left in standard automatic mode but also features a sequential shift mode that is controlled using the gear selector or steering wheel controls.
In the front-wheel drive Renegade, the new DCT transmission and 1.6-liter MultiJet diesel engine will return 3.5L/100 km, or the equivalent of about 52 US MPG. Fuel economy ratings for the combination in the Fiat Tipo sedan, hatchback and station wagon, as well as the Fiat 500X and 500L, were not immediately available.
The 1.6-liter MultiJet diesel and dual dry clutch automatic transmission powertrain combo is available across Europe starting this November.
