When The Fiat 124 Abarth made its debut at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show, the Italian automaker also rolled out a 124 Abarth Rally based on the little two-seater. The rally going version of the 124 Abarth is to race in the FIA’s R-GT Cup next year, and it was recently filmed undergoing testing ahead of its competition debut.
The 124 Abarth Rally packs a 300 horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder under its hood, which is linked up to a six-speed sequential gearbox that sends drive to the rear wheels. It also boasts other equipment necessary to go rallying such as OZ wheels, Sabelt seats and harnesses, dual rally lights and a mechanical limited-slip differential.
The future of the R-GT Cup is currently in a grey area. Just two Frenchmen in Porsche 911s entered the series last year and despite a good amount of initial interest, some are already declaring it dead. That would be a major shame, because the 124 Abarth Rally is easily one of the coolest looking and best sounding rally cars released in recent times and we’re anxious to see it compete.
Listen to the 124 Abarth Rally pop, bang and burble its way through one of its first-ever tests in the video above. Hopefully this isn’t one of the last times we get to see it in action.
