Each year, Motor Trend rounds up some of the best handling new cars on sale today and takes them out to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca tp decide which one is going to be their Best Driver’s Car for that year. Last year the Mercedes-AMG GT walked away from the test with top honors, but this year, it could be the Dodge Viper ACR that’s crowned the driver’s car king.
The Viper ACR is up against some stiff competition in this year’s test. The reigning champ, the Mercedes AMG-GT has returned, and is joined by other good driver’s cars such as the Porsche 911, Nissan GT-R, BMW M4 GTS, McLaren 570S and more. Even less expensive offerings like the Chevrolet Camaro 1LE and Mustang GT350R have a good shot at the award.
One thing’s for sure, the Dodge Viper ACR will be the fastest car in the test. We know this because the ACR is the fastest production car to ever lap Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, completing the feat in 1:28.65 and spawning the special edition Viper 1:28 Edition ACR.
Best Driver’s Car is about more than just speed, however. MT editors also look for a fun, engaging driving experience that will excite even most seasoned of gearheads. We’d say the Viper fits that bill as well, so hopefully it can pull out the win against the hoard of European sports and supercars also participating in the test.
