The Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade are both compact crossover based on Fiat Chrysler’s Small Wide 4×4 architecture. The two have many similarities – but an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash test ratings isn’t one of them.
That’s because the 500X is rated as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, while the Renegade simply received an overall rating of ‘Good’. The 500X receives its extra points thanks to its better performances in the Small Front Overlap test and in the areas of head restraints & seats.
It’s interesting to note that the 500X and Renegade both had points docked for their headlights, which were rated by the IIHS as ‘Poor’. According to the institute, both provide “inadequate,” visibility on the low and high beam functions. The IIHS released a report earlier this year indicating “not a single small SUV,” it tested had headlights that received a ‘Good’ rating.
