Just over a tenth of a second separated Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and polesitter Lewis Hamilton in Q3 ahead of the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix this morning, with the German turning in a lap of 1:12.990 to the Briton’s 1:12.812.
While Vettel came close enough to the Mercs to worry the Silver Arrows squad, his teammate Kimi Raikkonen struggled throughout the qualifying session. The Fin qualified sixth after posting a lap of 1:13.579 around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, placing him behind Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in fourth and Max Verstappen in fifth.
Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg split Vettel and Hamilton in second with a lap of 1:12.874. Williams’ Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa were seventh and eighth, with Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg, and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso completing the top ten.
The second qualifying session was red flagged when Carlos Sainz clipped the Canadian circuit’s infamous ‘Wall of Champions’ and damaged his rear suspension. It was the second of two crashes Sunday, with Manor’s Rio Haryanto hitting the wall and spinning across the track at Turn 4.
