Mopar claimed yet another NHRA victory at Summernationals this weekend, with Don Schumacher Racing’s Ron Capps taking the Funny Car class victory to move into the series’ points lead.
The result was Capps’ third win of 2016 and his second consecutive win after he took a win last weekend at the New England Nationals. So far this year, Mopar drivers have posted five wins in 10 events.
Polesitter Capps defeated fellow Mopar racer John Hale in the first round of racing before defeating Chevrolet’s John Force in the quarterfinals. In the semis, he was lined up against Del Worsham, posting a pass of 3.996 at 310.55 mph to defeat Worsham’s 8.890.
Capps was lined up on the grid next to DSR teammate Jack Beckman for the all Mopar final. When the lights went out, both responded with .063-second reaction times, however Beckman lost traction and Capps soared by with a fast 3.954-second pass at 316.90 mph.
“I almost felt embarrassed driving this car today because it’s so good,” Capps said. “You just don’t want to mess up when it’s that good. It’s yours to lose. It wasn’t that we didn’t struggle today. We did. But we just worked so well together. There was a lot of good communication.”
Mopar didn’t have quite as good of a weekend in the NHRA’s Pro Stock class. Erica Enders was lined up against fellow Mopar driver Jeg Coughlin Jr. in the first round, with Coughlin advancing with a 6.708/207.56 pass. Coughlin later lost to Chevy’s Jason Line, putting an end to his weekend.
In Sportsman, Jonathan Allegrucci advanced to the final round in his 2011 Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, however engine problems put an early end to his day.
Mopar teams will head to the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tennessee for the next round of the NHRA drag racing series on June 17th.
