Mopar claimed yet another NHRA Funny Car class win at the 16th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals this weekend after Don Schumacher Racing’s Tommy Johnson Jr. defeated teammate Matt Hagan in the all-Mopar final round.
The result was the sixth win of 2016 for Mopar in NHRA Funny Car racing and the fifth consecutive all-Mopar final. It was also the seventh time in 11 events that the Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car landed in the winner’s circle.
Johnson defeated Cruz Pedregon in the first round of racing before taking down to Robert Hight in his second race of the weekend. This advanced the Mopar driver to the semifinals for the third time this season, where he defeated Alexis DeJoria to advance to the finals.
In the final race, Johnson’s pass of 4.030 seconds at 317.57 mph was enough to beat Hagan’s 4.038/313.22 and give him an extra-special win on Father’s Day. On his way to the final, Hagan beat Tim Wilkerson, Courtney Force and DSR teammate Ron Capps.
Jeg Coughlin Jr. had the strongest Mopar in Pro Stock this weekend. The five-time world champ defeated Bo Butner in the first round of the weekend to advance to a meet up with fellow Mopar competitor Allen Johnson. Coughlin defeated Johnson, however he would go on to lose to Greg Anderson in the next round after experiencing tire shake.
