There are many reasons to become a classic car owner, and Sam Fankuchen, owner of a 1970 Jeepster Commando, knows exactly why he took up the hobby: to enjoy vintage cars for himself, and to pass the interest in them on to the next generation.
Fankuchen’s Jeepster Commando packs a rebuilt Dauntless V6 under the hood and also features other unique touches like Recaro seats from an MK1 Golf GTI (shod in marine leather to withstand the elements, aftermarket gauges, a roll bar, winch and more.
Together, Fankuchen and his Commando have traveled all over the state of California. He’s obviously enjoyed his time with the car, but he hopes to get something more out of the experience than self satisfaction.
“I did it so that one day I’d be able to introduce my kids to cars like this,” Fankuchen said. “When you’re looking at the future of our economy here, it’s really important to encourage an interest at a young age.”
“The next time a little kid sees this car and it makes him really happy, I know it maybe ignited a sense of understanding or appreciation for math and science and mechanical systems, which I think are going to be really important for people to continue to care about.”
We can’t argue with that logic and think it’s great to see a fellow enthusiast eager to pass on his knowledge and expertise to the younger, more technologically adapted generations. Hear what else Fankuchen has to say about his Jeepster Commando in the Petrolicious-produced video above.
