Matt Hagan drove to his second consecutive NHRA Funny Car victory in his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car in Topeka, Kansas this weekend. The result is Hagan’s 20th career win and the third win so far this year for Mopar team Don Schumacher Racing.
Hagan began his weekend by taking the No. 1 qualifying spot Friday with a pass of 3.862 seconds at 335.57 mph. He then beat Brian Stewart Saturday with a pass of 3.943/325.69 and Robert Hight with a pass of 3.942/323.81. This advanced Hagan to the semis, where he put up a 3.951/324.05 to nudge out Courtney Force.
In the finals, Hagan was lined up against DSR teammate Jack Beckman, who beat Tommy Johnson Jr. and Tim Wilkerson to advance to the final. Beckman smoked the tires off the start, however Hagan’s Dodge then fishtailed, allowing Beckman to catch his teammate. Hagan receovered well, however, and beat out Beckman’s 6.560/146.75 pass with a 5.724/179.04.
In Pro Stock, Allen Johnson advanced to the semi-finals in his Marathon Petroleum Dodge Dart after bearting out Aaron Strong and Bo Butner. Johnson then encountered oil on the track in the semi final round against Greg Anderson, causing him to lose traction and lose out to Anderson’s winning 6.672/206.67 time with a 7.317/144.18.
Erica Enders knocked out Drew Skillman in the weekend’s opening round in her Mopar Performance Dodge Dart, but fell short to Jason Line in the second round. Jeg Coughlin Jr., meanwhile, was knocked out of the opening round by Shane Gray.
