Mopar’s Matt Hagan put his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car in the winner’s circle at this weekend’s 36th annual National Hot Rod Association Southern Nationals in Atlanta. The result was Hagan’s first win of the season and the 19th of his career.
The Don Schumacher Racing-Mopar squad put in a strong showing this weekend, with Hagan and teamamtes Jack Beckman and Tommy Johnson Jr. all making it into the semi-finals. Hagan beat points leader Courtney Force in the semis to advance, while Beckman took out Jim Campbell on his way to the Mopar vs. Mopar final.
In the final round, Hagan posted a pass time of 3.965 seconds at 314.90 mph to edge out Beckman, who spun the tires and ended up posting a pass of 8.073 seconds at 79.59 mph.
In NHRA Pro Stock competition, Allen Johnson raced his Marathon Petroleum Dodge Dart to a semifinal appearance, where he unfortunately lost to Jason Line, who bested his 6.656/208.20 pass with a 6.603/210.24. Jeg Coughlin Jr., racing the Magneti Marelli Offered by Mopar Jegs.com Dodge Dart, won his first race of the weekend but was knocked from contention in the second round.
Rounding out the weekend for Mopar was Erica Enders, who in her first race responded with a fast .021 reaction time versus opponent Chris McGaha but lost control of her Mopar Performance Dodge Dart after hitting a bump in the track. She recovered well, but finished .008 seconds behind McGaha and was knocked out.
NHRA will travel to Topeka, Kansas the weekend of May 20th for the Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
