The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will stay true to the vehicle’s roots, but it will also introduce several firsts for the nameplate. A 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and eight-speed automatic transmission are two of these new features, but according to Jalopnik, there will be major updates with the Wrangler’s roof system, too.
A poster on JLWranglerForums.com using a “dealer source,” claims the 2018 Wrangler will be available with a power folding soft top roof, a true three-piece hard top roof and an optional hardtop roof with a glass panoramic panel.
Jalopnik thinks the power-folding soft top will replace the traditional manual soft top that is currently offered on the Wrangler. It would make sense for conventicle sake, but as they so rightfully point out, it’s something Wrangler purists may take issue with. Both manual and electric folding tops could be offered, but it’s too early to say right now.
The “true three-piece hardtop,” is likely a variation of the current hardtop, which allows for two pieces to be removed from the front section to create a sunroof-style opening. The new three-piece roof could dismantle in three separate sections entirely, or it could only open at the front like the current hardtop.
The hardtop with the panoramic glass panel, meanwhile, will be an optional extra and should give occupant the feeling of being exposed to the elements without having to actually go outside. We think it will be popular with the soccer moms and other family types who see to be taking to the Jeep image more and more.
