Scuderia Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were unable to knock the two Mercedes-Benzes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg off the front grid during qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, posting the third and fourth fastest times of the session, respectively.
Hamilton was 0.077s faster than his teammate on his way to the pole position lap, which was the fastest ever lap of the Sakhir circuit in F1 history. Earlier on in the session Hamilton posted the fourth fastest lap of the session after running wide in the final turn, making it look as though Rosberg would once again start from the first position on the grid.
Just Mercedes and Ferrari participated in the final runs of the Q3 session. Earlier in the session Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo put his car in fifth for Sunday’s start, just ahead of Williams’ Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas in fifth and sixth. Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg was eighth fastest, the slowest car in Q3.
Vettel’s best lap of the session was a 1.30.012, 232 thousandths of a second faster than Raikkonen’s.
