The Fiat 124 Abarth will arrive in Australia, the automaker has confirmed, however it will be the only variant of the Fiat 124 Spider to be available for sale in the country.
Speaking to Drive.com.au, Fiat Chrysler Automobile Australia’s marketing and product manager Zac Loo said the Abarth 124 would be the only 124 model offered in Australia as they are targeting the performance segment specifically.
“From our perspective, we’re going after the performance sector of the market with that car and we believe it speaks exactly to what you want in a roadster,” Loo said.
“We think it will be an excellent expression of performance and the heritage of the Abarth brand.”
The Abarth 124 Spider will be sold with a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine borrowed from the Fiat 500 Abarth hatchback. In Europe the Abarth 124 will produce 170 horsepower, while the North American spec model will be detuned to 160 horsepower.
Drive.com.au says the Abarth 124 Spider will be positioned above the Mazda MX-5 pricewise, with prices expected to start in the low $40,000s when the performance convertible arrives in Aussie showrooms later this year.
