Ferrari got off to a strong start in the 2016 Australian GP, with Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vette jumping both Mercedes on the start and pulling away from the championship defending team in the race’s opening laps.
Things only got worse from there on out, however. After the race was red flagged, the cars were forced to line up on the grid and restart. Raikonnen’s engine then failed, putting him out of the race.
The same turn of events that also negatively affected Vettel, throwing off his aggressive two-stop tire strategy and forcing him to pit late in the race and hand his lead over the Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg.
Of note, however, was Raikkonen’s reaction to his engine failure. The Fin stayed calm as he exited his car, despite a fire raging in his airbox about three inches above his head and didn’t race his way out of the car the way you might assume he would. They don’t call him the Iceman for nothing.
