A mysterious long wheelbase Jeep Cherokee has been spied testing by Autoblog photographers, hinting at the possible arrival of a larger crossover based on the Cherokee’s Compact U.S. Wide architecture.
There are a few possible answers as to what the long wheelbase prototype may be. The obvious one would be that it’s a Jeep prototype, potentially the ‘Wagoneer’, which is to undercut the impending Grand Wagoneer both in size and price. It would make sense for the Grand Wagoneer to be based off the newer Compact U.S. Wide platform rather than the aging WK2 platform employed in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango, so we feel as though this assumption has some merit.
Another possibility is that the prototype spied was for a crossover from another one of Fiat Chrysler’s brands. Dodge’s replacement for the Journey should be with us relatively soon and it seems possible it could be based off of a lengthened Cherokee. Disguising the prototype as a Jeep would also be a good way for FCA to throw off people like you and me.
Whatever the Cherokee prototype’s hiding, we won’t have to wait very long to see it. Check out the photos over at Autoblog and let us know what you think in the comments below.
