In a unique recall, Fiat Chrysler is recalling 2011-2016 Dodge Charger vehicles to give owners wheel chocks so that they remain safe while changing the wheels of the full-size sedan.
The defect: when an affected vehicle is lifted using the supplied tire jack (such as to change a wheel) without chocking the wheels, the vehicle’s body-side sill may give causing the tire jack to fail and the car to fall.
According to FCA U.S., the Chargers have a unique body structure, and the chocks will help owners ensure that the instructions set forth in the manual are followed.
“The body structure of this vehicle is unique. If owner’s manual instructions are not followed, slippage may occur. Chocks are being provided to help ensure the instructions are followed,” he said. “We are continually analyzing warranty data to identify ways to improve the ownership experience. When tire-jack data was reviewed, we identified a need to further assist our customers.”
The hazard: a car that falls unexpectedly increases the risk of injury.
Reported injuries or deaths: FCA states that it is aware of three minor hand injuries from this problem.
Number of vehicles affected: a total of 504,723 vehicles, of which:
- 441,578 are in the Untied States
- 19,229 are in Canada
- 4,969 are in Mexico
- 38,947 are outside the NAFTA region
Affected vehicles: 2011-2016 Dodge Charger manufactured August 23, 2010 to to January 7, 2016.
The fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will provide owners with wheel chocks, free of charge. Though parts are not currently available, owners will be sent an interim notification by early April 2016. A second letter will be mailed when the tire chocks are available. The chocks will be provided free of charge.
