Long 24-hour endurance races can be dangerous, but at this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, it was qualifying that carried a larger margin for disaster. The Friday afternoon session was nearly rained out, however race officials decided to go ahead with it despite the treacherous conditions.
Racer stuck a GoPro camera to Scuderia Corsa driver Alessandro Pier Guidi’s Ferrari 488 GT3 before he set out for his qualifying run Friday, capturing what it’s like for GTLM driver in especially wet conditions. It quickly becomes apparent how difficult it is as Pier Guidi understeers, slides and drifts his way through the lap, nearly putting the new Ferrari into the wall on one occasion.
Pier Guidi was the fastest Scuderia Corsa driver in the qualifying session, setting a lap time of 2:03.309 (103.934), the fourth fastest time in GTLM and overall. He and the No. 62 Ferrari 488 squad of Alexandre Prémat, Daniel Serra and Memo Rojas went on to finish to Daytona 24 fourth in GTLM, an impressive showing for the all-new 488 GT3.
