In December Alfa Romeo revealed some additional information about its BMW X3-fighting crossover – such as that it will be with us by as early as early 2017. That’s a fairly short time in regards to the automotive industry, so it’d be reasonable to assume that work on the crossover is well underway.
If a picture posted to Fiat Chrysler design boss Ralph Gilles Instagram page is any indication, the Alfa Romeo crossover is indeed far along in its development. The photo shows Alfa Romeo designer Lorenzo Ramaciotti sitting in the rear of what is assumed to be the new Alfa crossover, giving us our first-ever glimpse at the vehicle’s interior.
Judging by this photo, the Alfa Romeo crossover will feature an oddly shaped trunk opening and an interior very similar to that of the Giulia sedan. It will ride on Fiat Chrysler’s new modular platform and should also utilize the same 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that is expected to be found under the hood of the Giulia. A high-performance version featuring the Ferrari-derived twin turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 from the Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde could also be on the cards.
The same modular platform set to underpin the mid-size Alfa Romeo crossover pictured here is also expected to spawn a larger crossover variant to rival vehicles like the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. It’s unclear when the larger crossover may arrive, however the debut of the X3 rival is expected sometime this year.
