In August an interesting report emerged indicating that Fiat Chrysler dealers had gotten a sneak peak look at the rumored full-size, three-row Jeep Grand Wagoneer. That pretty much confirmed the existence of the model, but as Automotive News reports, that’s far from the whole story.
Speaking to investors and media following FCA’s 2015 profit announcement, company CEO Sergio Marchionne not only directly referred to the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, but also brought up a mysterious ‘Wagoneer’ model, saying it was part of the ‘Wagoneer’ family.
“I think it’s important for us to have found a home for the Grand Wagoneer family — both the Grand Wagoneer and the Wagoneer — in whatever shape they come, and that we find that space without creating additional production capacity,” he said.
The Grand Wagoneer is expected to be a three-row luxury SUV with seating for eight and a price tag close to or above $100,000. There is theoretically room for a smaller Wagoneer luxury mode beneath the Grand Wagoneer as it would not rob sales from the Grand Cherokee due to its status as a true luxury vehicle. The Wagoneer nameplate would also further separate Jeep’s tough trail-rated models like the Wrangler from a Cadillac Escalade-fighting luxury crossover or another vehicle of the like.
We’re just speculating, however. It’s not clear what Marchionne meant when he referred to the ‘Wagoneer family’, but with the rapid expansion he has planned for Jeep, we probably won’t have to wait long to find out.
