George Barris, one of the world’s most original and talented car customizers, passed away last year at the age of 89, but you could still own a Barris custom car for yourself. Barrett-Jackson will sell off five unique George Barris-built cars at its Scottsdale auction this month, including the famous 1966 Dodge Tradesman-based ‘SuperVan’.
George Barris originally built the SuperVan with the concept of it being the ‘Love Machine’, however he doubled back on the project after he was asked to include it in the 1977 movie SuperVan. It was later included in multiple TV shows and also served as the Hill Valley Transport bus in Back to the Future 2.
In SuperVan the vehicle is powered by electricity, but in reality there’s a standard Dodge Tradesman with a 318 V8 and 3-speed manual transmission underneath the disco-era aesthetics. It’s not clear what the SuperVan’s odometer reads, but that’s probably not on the minds of the George Barris fans that will have their eye on this iconic piece of design at Barrett Jackson Scottsdale.
