Ferrari has announced Sam Bird, 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship LMP2 champion and Formula E driver, has joined its factory driver roster. The 28-year old will drive the No. 71 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE in the FIA WEC this year alongside Davide Rigon.
Bird is no stranger to red overalls, having driven two FIA WEC races for AF Corse in 2014 in their 458 GTE. He said he’s “delighted,” to be a part of Ferrari’s factory driver squad – which also includes James Calado, Gianmaria Bruni, Toni Vilander, Giancarlo Fisichella, Olivier Beretta and Andrea Bertolini.
“As a young boy, I used to look at Ferrari’s Prancing Horse and think it was the symbol in motorsport, and I am thrilled to be associated with it,” Bird said in a statement.
The appointment of Bird represents another driver shuffle in Ferrari’s factory roster. This year, Calado will drive AF Corse’s No. 51 car this year alongside Bruni, who drove the No. 71 entry in 2015. Bruni replaces Vilander in the role, who has been moved to the IMSA WeatherTech Championship in order to drive Canadian Ferrari team Risi Competizione’s 488 alongside Fisichella. Beretta and Bertolini, who drove R Ferri Motorsport’s 458 in the Pirelli World Challenge in 2015, have yet to secure a seat this year.
