Last year Fiat Chrysler celebrated the return of the legendary Dodge Viper ACR by taking the car to 13 different road courses across America and breaking the production car lap record at each and every one. That further proved the Viper’s prowess on the road course, and the video your about to see should cement its reputation as a strong contender at the drag strip, too.
Recently, Jeff Lutz climbed behind the wheel of Shawn Beard’s twin-turbocharged 1997 Viper and completed a quarter-mile pass of 6.78-seconds at 211 mph. The run was the fastest ever quarter-mile pass by a Viper, eclipsing the previous record of 6.98-seconds set by Sal Patel.
Lutz had never driven Beard’s Viper before he made this fateful pass, which was pushing 1,788 horsepower at the wheels that night. Still, he launched the car at 4,400 RPM and stayed in the gas all the way through, shifting only once the needle had hit the 7,500 RPM redline.
“I launched at 4,400 rpm and it had the front wheels up in the air,” Lutz told Hot Rod Magazine. “It kept going straight so I shifted at 7,500 rpm, then again at 7,500, and just stayed in it. I think it set the front end down after the finish line.”
