Fiat Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with the power lift gate option, which may be susceptible to the intrusion of moisture, resulting in a short circuit.
The defect: in affected vehicles, water may leak into the Power Liftgate Control Module and result in a high resistance short circuit.
The hazard: a short circuit in the module increases the risk of a fire.
Injuries or deaths: none.
Number of vehicles affected: a total of 55,687 vehicles, of which:
- 32,784 are in the Untied States
- 10,138 are in Canada
- 924 are in Mexico
- 11,841 are outside the NAFTA region
Affected vehicles: 2015-2016 Jeep Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 18, 2015 to September 10, 2015 and equipped with the power liftgate option.
The fix: FCA will advise owners when they may schedule service, and dealers will inspect the module and connectors for corrosion, replacing the damaged components as necessary. The mastic shield will be removed and the module will be covered with a water shield. These recall-related repairs will be performed free of charge.
The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. In the interim, owners should monitor the cargo areas of the vehicles equipped with power lift gates and keep them dry.
