Mercedes AMG Petronas had one of the most successful seasons for a Formula 1 team in the history of the sport in 2015, however not all was well at the Brackley, UK-based team this year. Drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton frequently butted heads – and Scuderia Ferrari is glad they didn’t have to deal with a similar situation between their two drivers.
Kimi Raikkonen recently told Finnish broadcaster MTV that it was a “relief,” for Ferrari to not have to deal with their two drivers not getting along. Vettel and Raikkonen have a good relationship and were seen speaking quite frequently throughout 2015, where as Raikkonen and former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso would hardly ever speak to one another.
“It is of course nicer for the drivers that they are on speaking terms, are able to work together and talk about things,” Raikkonen said.
“For the team, it is a pretty big relief and also an advantage that there is no secrecy or politics.”
Even though Raikkonen was consistently outscored by Vettel in 2015, he noted the team will be starting from scratch in 2016 and rightfully maintains that he has the pace to race with the best in F1.
“Next year will be another chance to start from zero,” Raikkonen said.
“However, the pace was ok compared to last year. If you do not have the momentum, that is a much more worrying situation, even if of course there is always a lot of room for improvement.”
