Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling certain units of the 2014 Dodge Dart compact sedan over an issue with the braking system. The issue could result in a loss of brake assist, lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
The defect: in affected vehicles, engine oil from the vacuum pump may seep into the brake booster, damaging a component within the brake booster, a feature that helps reduce stopping distances.
The hazards: internal damage to brake booster could result in a loss of brake assist, lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.
FCA US is aware of two minor injuries and seven accidents that are or may be related to this condition.
Affected vehicles: certain model year 2013-2014 Dodge Dart vehicles manufactured between February 27, 2012 and January 23, 2014 and equipped with either a 2.0L or 2.4L four-cylinder engine.
Number of vehicles affected: a total of 121,603 units in the following regions:
- 105,458 in the United States
- 11,996 vehicles in Canada
- 3,705 in Mexico
- 444 outside the NAFTA area
The fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake booster grommet for the presence of oil. If no oil is found, the vacuum tube assembly will be replaced. If oil is found, the vacuum pump, vacuum tube assembly, brake booster and master cylinder will be replaced.
However, replacement parts are not available to remedy the vehicles at the time of the recall announcement. As such, owners will be sent an interim notification and then will be sent a second notice when remedy parts are available.
The repairs will be performed free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.
Owners should: owners should note be advised that the condition may be preceded by a pop or a sound consistent with a vacuum leak. Customers who experience such events and/or hard pedal-feel are advised to contact their dealers.
