The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has handed the Chrysler 200 sedan and Fiat 500X crossover the highest possible Top Safety Pick+ safety ratings for the 2016 model year. Both models also received the top rating in 2015.
In order to receive a Top Safaety Pick+ rating, the vehicle being evaluated must have optional ‘AEB’ technology, or automatic emergency braking, the IIHS says. Fiat Chrysler says no other automaker offers AEB technology across more segments than them, with it appearing on its full-size, mid-size and compact crossovers, and mid- and full-size sedans.
“These results are a clear indication of where we’re headed,” said Fiat Chrysler vehicle safety head Mike Dahl. “That this advanced technology is available on these two distinctly different vehicles demonstrates our commitment to continue to incorporate AEB into our vehicle fleet.”
The AEB technology in the 200 sedan received the best rating of “superior,” while the system in the 500X received an “advanced,” rating. Both cars also received the best possible score of ‘Good’ in the IIHS’ crash tests, which include a rear collision simulation, moderate offset frontal impact and side impact, among others.
