This week Dodge announced its 2016 Viper ACR had broken the production car lap record at 13 different tracks across the United States – including Laguna Seca and Virginia International Raceway. But before setting off on a cross-country road trip to break records, we imagine the Viper team started with the one in their own backyard at Dodge’s Chelsea Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan.
Constructed in 1952, Chrysler’s Chelsea Proving Grounds have slowly expanded over the years and now include a road course, similar to General Motors’ Lutz Ring’. Chrysler has never published the lap times for the course, as far as we know, but we’re assured the 2016 Viper ACR’s recent lap of the track at the hands of Dodge vehicle dynamics engineer Chris Winkler is the fastest ever for a production car.
You might be a bit underwhelmed with this lap record, seeing as it’s almost a give-in the 2016 Viper ACR will be the fastest car to lap Dodge’s own personal track, but after watching the video below you might feel a it different. It’s a bumpy, high-speed lap with a lot of tricky sections, yet the stiff ACR handles it all with good composure.
