Earlier this year, Chevrolet’s Jim Mero set a production car lap record at the notoriously technical Virginia International Raceway in the 650 horsepower C7 Corvette Z06. He took the car around the course in a recorded time of 2:41.32, which is impressive to say the very least, but the team behind the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR knew they could beat it.
On their journey to break as many production car lap records as possible at some of America’s best road courses, the Viper ACR team stopped off at VIR and sent the high-downforce track special around the twisting track to see what it could do. Like every other course they stopped at, the Viper ACR easily squashed the old record – posting a time of 2:40.02 in the hands of Dodge engineer Chris Winkler (who is not a professional racing driver.)
