Fiat has added a new 1.3-liter MutliJet II diesel engine to the 500 compact’s engine lineup in Europe. The engine is the same 95 horsepower unit available in the 500X compact crossover in the region and will be offered on both Pop and Lounge trim levels of the 500 hatchback.
The new engine features the second generation of Fiat’s MultiJet technology and comes equipped with stop-start and high-pressure common rail injection for added efficiency. With 95 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque, the powerplant will scoot the 500 from 0-60 mph in 10.7 seconds. More importantly, it’s a little friendlier to the environment emitting just 89 grams of C02 compared to the old 1.3-liter diesel.
The new 1.3-liter MultiJet II engine joins a list of small alterations to the 500 for the 2016 model year. In addition to minor cosmetic adjustments, there’s also a redesigned interior, the latest version of Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect infotainment system and Fiat’s new ‘Dialogic’ semi-automatic transmission.
